Lily of the Field

Lilies of the Field could apply to many flowers that were called lilies in Bible times, such as the lotus, the iris, or others, but many think of the anemone as the lily of the field since it could be found growing wildly in great numbers of fields.  Anemones are very showy in brilliant colors of purple, red or blue with their distinct dark centers.

"And why be anxious about clothes?  Consider how the lilies grow in the fields; they do not work, they do not spin; and yet, I tell you, even Solomon in all his splendour was not attired like one of these."

Matthew 6:28-29

About this verse

Jesus, in His Sermon on the Mount, lets people know many of the attitudes and actions that God wants His people to incorporate into their lives. Because of His great love and provisions, He does not want people to spend their lives in anxiety. Rather, they should trust Him. He uses the birds of the air and the lilies of the field to remind of how He provides. There were many flowers called lilies in Bible times. However, the profusion of the brilliantly colored anemone growing in the area where Jesus gave the Sermon on the Mount causes many to think Jesus was referring to the anemone when he spoke of the lilies of the field.
